Shorter & Son was the pottery manufacturer where Clarice Cliff got her start as a designer. Her boss (and later, husband) is said to have given her a studio space, sent her on a design course at the Royal College of Art, and also sent her to Paris to further develop her talents as an artist. Around the time this piece was made, Clarice Cliff would have been Artistic Director of Shorter & Son Ltd.

This large serving plate is unique in its bold blue colours as most "fish ware" comes in neutrals like cream and soft greens. It features lovely details along the scales, fins, and face. It has also been noted in Pottery Gazette in 1935 that fish ware sets were purchased by the Queen Mother, then the Duchess of York.

A fabulous piece of English history, especially for ceramic enthusiasts. Antique c. 1930s-50s.

Measures roughly 37cm long, 27cm wide, 4cm deep.
